• Entry - palms facing outwards angled at approximately 35 degrees. Hand enters followed by wrist and then elbow - elbow remaining high.
• Downsweep - from entry, hand moves forward, sculls outwards to catch, sweeps downwards. Elbow begins to flex, keeping high throughout as the hand starts to accelerate.
• Insweep - near the end of the downsweep the elbow increases in flexion until 90 degrees. Hand turns inwards, acceleration continues.
• Upsweep - final underwater phase. Hand adjusts to a backward and outwards position, fingers point to the bottom of the pool. Once passed the hips, wrist rotates - palm turns inwards to release. Arm close to full extension.
• Recovery - elbow leads, arm travels forward - relaxed - elbow flexed and higher than the hand.
